Death is a universal experience. Everything dies and nothing lasts forever. In the case of Brittney Gargol, her demise came in the most unexpected way possible – at the hands of her own best friend, Cheyenne Antoine.
Our best friends are the people we trust wholeheartedly. Sadly, 18-year-old Brittney Gargol put her trust in the wrong person.
The case of Brittney was a “very long and complicated investigation,” in Crown prosecutor Robin Ritter’s words. Her case was solved two years after her body was found on the side of the road in Saskatchewan, Canada.
For the first two years, police had no idea who the possible perpetrators were. Antoine, in a desperate attempt to masquerade her own crime, fabricated stories to the police. She said she and Gargol went to bars and met “two black men” in Toronto, Canada. She implied that it was the black men who killed Brittney Gargol.
But the details she gave didn’t fit. This prompted investigators to search for any information wherever they could, such as Facebook, wherein they eventually found a selfie of Brittney Gargol and Cheyenne Antoine.
It seemed like a normal BFF selfie, until the police saw an interesting detail in the form of a belt. It turns out that the belt around Antoine’s waist in the selfie was the same object she used to strangle her own best friend.
The 21-year-old murderer then pleaded guilty of her crime. In Antoine’s statement that was released through her lawyer, she regrets the heartless crime she committed.
“Nothing I say or do will ever bring her back. I am very, very sorry … it shouldn’t have ever happened.”
